Next Group Coming Soon!
The WaveMind Clinic is offering a weekly skills-based parent group for parents of children between the ages of 8 and 12 who struggle with non-compliance, tantrums, oppositionality, rule-breaking, impulsivity, anger, aggression, or other challenging behaviors. If your child has a diagnosis of ODD, DMDD, or ADHD, and you’re finding that you could use more support in parenting your child, this may be a helpful group for you. (Your child does not need to have a diagnosis for you to participate.)
What will parents learn in this group?
Effective parenting is crucial to helping children with behavior challenges succeed. In our parent group, led by a team of experts in child behavior and parenting, parents will learn evidence-based tools and strategies to build and foster a positive relationship with their child, as well as disciplinary strategies to encourage compliance and rule following. Parents will also have the opportunity to receive support from other parents struggling with similar challenges. Here are some topics this group will cover:
Setting up “special” individual bonding time to encourage a strong positive relationship between parents and kids
Praise and positive attention for positive behaviors, and shifting away from focus on negative behaviors
“Active ignoring” of unwanted behaviors
Effective disciplinary strategies such as how to give clear commands and follow up and follow through with commands, and “house rules”
Setting up a behavior plan in the home using clear goals and rewards for following through with goals
Encouraging “good” behavior in other settings, such as school and out in public
