FAQs

What does a treatment session look like?

What treatment looks like depends on the age of your child, and your child’s presenting difficulties. For younger children, treatment sessions will always involve parents. We frequently use “coaching” methods to coach parents through skills that we’ll teach you, so that we are there with you in your ear in the moments that you need expert support most. For older children and teens, your therapist might spend the majority of an hour-long session with your child, and involve a parent as needed. After you complete an evaluation, we’ll be able to provide more detailed information about what sessions will look like with your child.

How long does treatment last?

The length of treatment depends on the age of your child, and your child’s presenting difficulties. Typically, we can see symptoms improve significantly over the course of 12 to 20 weeks, however this can vary. Treatment is a process, and sometimes we need to “course-correct” to make sure your child is making enough progress. We use evidence-based ways to track your child’s symptoms and yours and your child’s skills, and will have regular conversations with you about your child’s progress and planning for future sessions.

How often are sessions?

Sessions most typically occur once per week, for 45-55 minutes. At times, your expert therapist may recommend more frequent sessions (e.g., twice per week) to ensure that your child is making adequate progress. For some families, if things are going well, we may recommend transitioning to sessions every other week or even less frequent. We’ll always communicate with you about our recommendations for frequency of sessions, and collaborate based on your preferences and your child’s needs!

What happens if treatment isn’t working?

Unfortunately, even our best and most scientifically backed treatments don’t work for all children and families. Our therapists are trained to track your child’s symptoms and progress, and if things aren’t moving along in the way we’d all like them to, your therapist will collaborate with you on revising a treatment plan so that we can ensure we’re doing everything to get your child better. Sometimes it happens that your child’s presenting difficulties change, and we may recommend that you visit a different specialist at a different clinic. If this is the case, we’ll work closely with you and other specialist providers to ensure your child gets the right care.
